Has your life been impacted by a loved one's addiction? When addiction impacts someone you love you can feel confused, afraid, or resentful. You believe you have the power to change your loved one. Or maybe you feel like giving up. Perhaps you've acquired vast amounts of knowledge about Substance Use Disorder in attempts to convince your loved one to "get well", "just stop" or "choose life". But nothing changes and your life continues to be chaotic and uncertain. If that's where you are, I understand. Been there, too. Life seemed out of control and all of my knowledge and efforts were having little impact. I had knowledge but not the practical tools needed to make a difference in either my life or the life of my loved one.
But now......
Life is different for me and it can be for you, too. What I now know is that the power of staying connected to our loved one, despite their struggles, allows us to positively impact their recovery. I know that taking care of my needs, looking objectively at the circumstances and communicating more effectively can make a significant difference in the outcome for both the family and the loved one.
